Konganar, a Siddha used herbals and made gold of iron. He further improved the quality of the gold to a 500 touch. He prayed to Lord Shiva to further improve the touch. Lord Shiva appeared before him at a place dense with Iluppai trees and graced the Siddha to enhance the quality to 1000 touch. The gold thus prepared shone as a jyothi, a torch. When Kongana Siddha tried to take it out, the Jyothi went under the earth and appeared as a Shivalinga. As the Linga appeared from a jyothi, the Lord was named Swayamprakeswarar (Lord of Brightness) and also as Thanthondreeswarar. The village name comes from the Iluppai trees which grow in abundance in this area.

Here there is a Sivan Temple (Bhairavar Kovil). The temple's origin, according to Puranic legend, comes from a request by Siva, who appeared in a dream to a local chieftain. The chieftain was presented with a Soodamani, a precious stone, by Siva for building the temple. The nearby village situated at Karaikudi is known as Soodamanipuram for this reason. The lingam here is a natural one (Thanthondri-Eeswarar), meaning not shaped by man. Devotees perform abishek to Lord and Mother offering new vastras. They offer garlands made of Vada a famous dish of Tamilnadu with special pujas to Lord Bhairava. Those cured of their diseases light ghee lamps on coconut shells to Lord Bhairava.
