Hanuman Appears With Veena In One Hand & A Manuscript In The Other Hand - Ramaswamy Temple - Kumbakonam

Ramaswamy Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Rama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu located in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India. The temple has beautiful architecture pieces and has been built by the Nayakkar kings during the 16th century. Govinda Dikshitar, the prime minister of the Nayaks, constructed the temple. Hanuman can be seen with Veena in Sri Singeeswarar Temple located in Mappedu, Thiruvallur also. In Singeeswarar temple Hanuman is present in temple prakaram, but in Ramaswamy Temple He is present in main sanctum sanctorum (Garbhagriha).

The entire temple complex is covered by a granite wall. People hailing from Kerala may be knowing about the Irinjalakuda area temples where all the four Rama Brothers are having 4 separate temples (Nalambalam) - Thirupayar for Rama ; Irinjalakuda for Bharatha ; Moozhikulam for Lakshmana and Payammal for Shatrughana. But all the four brothers appear together only in 3 temples - Ayodhya in UP, Ayodhayapatnam near Salem and this temple. Further in Ayodhya and Ayodhyapatnam, it is the coronation pose for the Royal Couple, whereas here They appear in the wedding posture. Since Sri Rama and Seetha Devi appear in the wedding posture, people who are longing to get married, pray here to get Their blessings. There is a separate shrine for Perumal with Mothers Sridevi and Bhoodevi.

Unlike the other two temples, here Sri Rama appears along with Seetha Devi (in sitting posture) with His brothers performing various duties - Bharatha holding the umbrella, Lakshmana the bow and Shatrugana the Samaram (fan). Rama is keeping His hand in Vyakarna Mudra (a mudra for teaching where the right hand is in Abhaya hasta pose and left hand holding the dress). The idols of Rama and Seetha are believed to be made of Salagramam. This Temple, known as the southern Ayodhya, has lovely symbols of Rama and Seetha depicted in crowning liturgy pose.

This temple is well known for its wonderful paintings of the entire Ramayana story. 219 paintings were done on the walls of the inner prakaram using Herbal extracts. They are divided into 3 segments/rows of 73 each. Hence by going around the inner prakaram thrice (to cover one row at a time as they are serially numbered), one could get the entire Ramayana. In addition to these, the sixty two pillars in the mandapam adjoining the Gopuram, are carved with various episodes from Ramayanam. Each pillar is made of one stone and has delicate and prominent sculptures. One can read through Ramayana pictorially whilst taking three pradakshinams (rounds) of the sanctum.

Sri Hanuman is in his bowing position with an unusual accompaniment. Generally we find Him with his mace (gatha). Here He appears with veena in one hand and a manuscript (since the Master appears to be in teaching) in the other hand. We have been told from our childhood that the Anjani Putra is powerful and brave and here is an evidence that Hanuman was also the epitome of knowledge, wisdom and music! This is perhaps one of the few temples where one finds Veena in the hands of Vayuputran. The temple has every one of the components that Ramayana lets us know and is a tribute to Rama bhaktas.

Temple Location:

The temple is located right in the centre of Kumbakonam next to the Chakrapani temple. It is at the Southern end of the Big Bazaar Street. This is another Vaishnava temple associated with Mahamaham festival. This is relatively a new temple in the cluster of 5 temples associated with Mahamaham. It is only around 400 years old. Nayak Kings-Achutha and Raghunath- are credited in general and their Minister Shri Govinda Deekshitar in particular, with this temple construction. Deekshitar also constructed a commercial corridor connecting this temple with Chakrapani temple.
