Asia’s Largest Nandhi (Bull) - Sri Ramananda Murthy Swamygal Madam - Navakkarai, Coimbatore

Hindu devotees in Coimbatore have erected a 31-foot high statue of mythological bull Nandi, the biggest in Asia. The statue of Nandi, vehicle of Lord Shiva, Hindu god of destruction, at the Sri Malayala Devi Durga Bhagwati temple weighs 16,882 tonnes, and is fast becoming a pilgrim spot with people from across the country visiting the spot. Sri Ramananda Moorthy Swaymgal, the maker of the statue, said the huge statue was erected using black stone powder. "To make this statue stronger, we used cement mixed with black stone powder. This is erected with a view to make every human being think big," he said.

Swaymgal's name also figures in the Guinness Book Of World Records for erecting the highest Nandi statue. He said it took him five years and an army of 20,000 workers to complete the statue, which cost about 100,000 dollars. Visitors to the temple are thrilled to see such a massive statue of Nandi. The Nandhi devar is 10m heigh, 7m wide and 15m long.

The temple, one of the most revered in south India, is thronged by people of all faiths on the occasion of full moon day, known as Chithirai festival, where a sacred body of the goddess is anointed with herbal paste of sandalwood mixed with various herbs offered to the devotees. Devotees believe tasting the paste would cure them of all diseases.
