Lord Muruga Appears As A Child In The Morning, A Youth In Midday & As An Aged Person In The Evening - Sri Balasubramanya Swamy Temple - Andar Kuppam, Tiruvallur

Sri Balasubramanya Swami Temple, Andarkuppam Tiruvallur district. This is a small but very beautiful Temple with nice sculptures. This an ancient and very popular Murugan temple in this region. This is one of the Murugan temples glorified by Sri Arunagiri nadhar’s Thiruppugazh. It is a different darshan to the devotees that Lord Muruga praised as Adhikara Murugan looks like a child in the morning, a youth in midday and aged in the evening.

Lord Muruga is praised as Adhikara Murugan. The Vimana, tower above the sanctum sanctorum is of Ekadala design. Sri Varasiddhi Vinayaka graces the devotees. There are shrines for Lord Kasi Viswanatha, Mother Visalakshi and Lord Nataraja. People pray for senior job positions, to shine in responsible positions they hold and for wise children. Lord Bala Subramanya graces the devotees so mercifully without His weapons Vel, Vajram and Shakti. There are two elephants near the Lord. As He is appearing in a royal form, He is called Adhikara Murugan (Murugan with authority). Saint Arunagiriar had sung the praise of the Lord in his celebrated Tirupugazh hymns. Lord appears as a child in the morning, a youth in midday and as an aged person in the evening. As He came to this place as a poor little boy (Aandi), the place was called Aandiarkuppam which later changed as Andarkuppam. As Andar means ruler, the name Andarkuppan appears to be an appropriate name.

Lord Brahmma sought the pardon of Lord Muruga for taking up the creation work though He was not qualified for the job. He is before the sanctum sanctorum as an oval shaped idol without a form. Only the Kamandalam and Akshamala attributed to Him are in the circle. The main vehicle of Lord Muruga is peacock. Among the six army camps attributed to the Lord, He has the elephant as His vahan in Swamimalai, Tiruthani and in the Chennai Kumaran kundram temples. In this temple, He has Lion also as His vahan belonging to Mother Shakti along with peacock and it is significant that the Lion is holding the peacock. His wedding with Deivanai is celebrated on the fifth day of the Chithirai Brahmmotsavam and with Valli on the 9th day of the festival. Kumara Sashti is celebrated in the month of Karthikai when Muruga was born followed by Laksharchana – chanting the glorious names of the Lord one lakh times.

Lord Brahmma during His visit to Kailash ignored Muruga as He was a little boy. Muruga intercepted Brahmma and enquired about His position and qualifications. Generally, one who questions the other would be either old in age or one holding a higher position. Here, it was vice versa. While questioning the Creator, Lord Muruga had both His hands on the hip with a senior look and proved that He was more learned than the Creator.

Lord Muruga appears in this posture in the temple. Later some poor people (Aandi) were worshipping Him. A devotee on his pilgrimage stayed here and wanted to have a bath and worship the Lord and asked the Aandis for a river or well. They said there is none such nearby. A little boy came there, took the traveller to a place and punched the earth with Vel at a place. A spring came up and the traveller's joy knew no bounds. Lord Muruga granted darshan to him and stayed as Lord Balasubramanya.
