To Get Rid Of Difficulties - Puratasi Sani Pooja

Lord Shani
Lord Shani
Every year, the Saturdays which fall in the Tamil month of Purattasi (It starts in mid September and ends in mid October) have a special celebration. Purattassi is the month when the Sun is in Virgo, a sign ruled by Mercury. Mercury’s overlord is Vishnu, the God of wealth. Vishnu has unique powers on these Saturdays. He is particularly effective in minimizing negative or delaying effects from Saturn on Purattassi Saturdays. So it’s going to be a great time for people to work on their prosperity. Lord Vishnu descended into the Earth plane in human form of Venkateshwara (Lord Tirupati) during the Tamil Month of Purattasi. He is the protector of the Kali Yuga and showers wealth, well-being, supreme prosperity, pleasures and spiritual enlightenment. Participate in the Purattasi Saturday rituals and receive the blessings of Vishnu.

It is believed that Shani's gaze can spell disaster even to the most influential and powerful. Lord Ganesh getting an elephant's head is attributed to Shani. He being the devotee of Lord Shiva was meditating in the Himalayas to be close to his Lord. When Parvati, Shiva's consort, gave birth to Ganesh, she distributed sweets to Shiva's ganas, - the hosts. Goddess Parvati asked Shani to have a look at the child and bless him. Shani kept his head down and sought forgiveness from seeing the child, pleading that his gaze was inauspicious. Parvati, being the great Lord's consort, took no notice of this and asked him to bless the newborn. As soon as Shani lifted his head and looked at the child, the newborn's head got blown off.

Another celebrated myth about Shani is mentioned in the Ramayana. When King Ravana succeeded in getting control over all the nine planets, he installed them face down on the nine steps that led to his throne. Each morning, he would step on their back to ascend his throne, causing insult and anguish to them. One day sage Narada came to Ravana, and upon seeing the state of the nine planets asked Shani, how as the mightiest and most terrible of the planets, he could bear this insult? Shani replied because he was lying face downward he was helpless, but if he could cast his gaze on Ravana, matters would change. After Narada was shown around the magnificent palace of Ravana the proud king wanted his opinion. The wise sage replied that everything was excellent at the palace of Ravana, except for one. 'How can Ravana get the pleasure of subduing the nine planets when they were lying face downwards?' he asked. It was better if they were lying with their faces upward so that when Ravana stepped over their chests, he could get the pleasure of seeing the discomfort on their faces. This suggestion appealed to the mighty king and he quickly ordered his staff to turn the nine planets around on their backs. As soon as that was done, Shani's gaze fell on Ravana and his reason abandoned him. Within a few months he kidnapped Sita, the wife of Lord Rama that led to Lord Rama's invasion of his kingdom. Ravana and his entire family were killed, and al this happened during the seven and half years cycle of Shani.

One more version of the story behind why Lord Shani stays away from those who remember the Lord Ram's name. Once Lord Hanuman was sitting silently absorbed in deep meditation of Lord Rama. Lord Shani passed by and he felt to tease Hanuman. He started teasing Hanuman by pulling his tail, and pinching. Hanuman warned him to go away as he is his Guru's (Lord Sun) son, and so he respects him. When Shani did not hear, then Hanuman started to give him a good thrashing. In the end, Shani pleaded to leave him and Hanuman took a promise from him that Shani will never ever go near a devotee who is meditating on Lord Rama.

Puratasi saturdays are dedicated to Lord Shani or Sani Bhagvan. Some people observe partial fasting on all days in Puratassi others limit it to Puratasi Saturdays. Some devotees of Lord Venkateswara opt for strict fast on Puratasi Saturdays which involves not even drinking a drop of water - Nirjala Vratam. Some devotees does not include onion, garlic and meat in their meal throughout this month. Some devotees have the ritual of doing Mavilaku Mavu poojai for Lord Venkateshwara on Saturday(1st or 3rd or 5th saturday). Devotees who fast, should feed the crow, the vehicle of Lord Shani first and should have the food. Donate black sesame on Saturdays or light a til oil lamp to Saturn on Saturdays. To get rid of adverse affects of Lord Shani.

Those who are suffering from Lord Shani's adverse affect during this month light a til oil lamp. There is a procedure to do the pooja. Don’t do the Sani pooja alone. First do it to Sani then to Lord Vishnu. After doing the pooja do a pooja to Sri Anjaneyar. Worship Anjaneyar, all your Sani Problems will reduced. You can do the Archani in the given manner.

There is a old saying in Tamil - Saniyai Pol Koduparum Illai (None gives like Sani!), Saniyai Pol Keduparum Ilai (None destroys like Sani!). But when the influence of His over he will give all the health, wealth, happiness to your life.
